About the program
The Start from Knowledge program supports students, researchers, and faculty who want to bring scientific and technological knowledge from academia to the market.
The program awards a non-refundable voucher of €30,000 per project, paid 100% upfront after approval, to support the initial steps in creating and validating the business.

The Start from Knowledge program is part of Deep2Start, a measure of the Accelerate Economy Plan, and is one of the three project types of the Startup Competitiveness Incentive System.
The program aims to bring academic research closer to the market, helping to transform research results, theses, R&D projects, and proofs of concept into products, services, and business models with economic potential.
The program is aimed at micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, including startups.
The company must be majority-owned by an individual who is currently, or has been in the previous two calendar years:
- Enrolled in a degree-granting study program at a national Higher Education Institution;
- Or to perform research or teaching duties at a national Higher Education Institution.
The €30,000 voucher can support activities such as:
- Ignition, incubation, and acceleration programs;
- Company formation, planning and initial structuring of the business;
- Participation in events and trade shows;
- Marketing strategy, pitch deck, and video pitch;
- Proof of concept and pilot projects;
- Business model and financial planning;
- Intellectual property protection;
- Mapping regulatory needs and certifications.
Expenses incurred since the beginning of the previous calendar year may also be eligible, provided they are related to the preparation and commencement of business activity.
Applications are submitted through the official online platform.
Following submission, ANI and Startup Portugal participate in the technical analysis of the applications. The FITEC Executive Committee is responsible for the funding decision, issued within 30 working days after the closing of the call for proposals.
After approval, the €30,000 voucher is paid 100% in advance upon acceptance.
