About the program

Start from Knowledge is part of Deep2Start, a measure of the Plano Acelerar Economia, and one of the three project types under the Sistema de Incentivos à Competitividade das Startups.

The program aims to bridge the gap between academic research and the market, helping transform research results, theses, R&D projects and proofs of concept into products, services and business models with economic potential.

Who can apply

The program is aimed at micro, small and medium-sized companies, including startups.

The company must be majority-owned by an individual who is currently, or has been in the previous two calendar years:

• Enrolled in a degree-granting study cycle at a Portuguese Higher Education Institution;
• Or working as a researcher or professor at a Portuguese Higher Education Institution.

What can be funded

The €30,000 voucher can support activities such as:

• Ignition, incubation and acceleration programs;
• Business setup, planning and early-stage structuring;
• Participation in events and fairs;
• Marketing strategy, pitch deck and video pitch;
• Proofs of concept and pilot projects;
• Business model and financial planning;
• Intellectual property protection;
• Regulatory and certification mapping.

Expenses already incurred since the beginning of the previous calendar year may also be eligible, when related to preparation and early business activity.

How it works

Applications are submitted through the official online platform.

After submission, ANI and Startup Portugal take part in the technical analysis of applications. The FITEC Executive Committee is responsible for the funding decision, which is issued within 30 working days after the call closes.

Once approved, the €30,000 voucher is paid 100% in advance after acceptance.
